Welcome to the website of Alan Bateman displaying a range of my lino cut prints and collage.

Based in Aberdare, South Wales, U.K, most of my work is inspired by the landscape and buildings around me I am also interested in traditional skills and pastimes and I will be creating a new series of prints and collage based on this theme. Artistic influences are mainly those of mid twentieth century artists such as John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Julian Trevelyan.

I find that my most successful prints start with the germ of an idea based on a pen and ink outdoor sketch. These are then made into cut outs or collage which eventually may become prints. All my prints are made by hand as I do not own a printing press I enjoy learning new techniques and there will be influenced from Japanese relief printing techniques to those of the Grovesnor School.

More details about my work in progress can be found on my blog.
